Hello and welcome! ACT Shotokan Karate is a Dojo of Shotokan Karate International Australia (SKIA). We practice traditional Japanese Karate (restricted contact), as passed down from Kanazawa Soke (10th Dan Founder of the Shotokan Karate International Federation). We are affiliated with the Australasian Federation of Traditional Karate and Kobudo (AFTK), and are active participants in interstate and international Karate seminars and tournaments.
We train at the Belconnen Community Centre from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. We also have an advanced techniques session from 5pm to 7pm on Sundays, and we regularly participate in Multi-style Training with other ACT Karate clubs to exchange ideas.
Sensei Mark Porreca is the Resident Instructor of the ACT Shotokan Karate Dojo. He began training at the age of 15 and graded to Rokudan (6th Dan Black Belt) under Kanazawa Kancho at the 2019 SKIA National Seminar. Mark Sensei is a member of the SKIA Technical & Development Committee and the SKIA Referees Council. He is qualified as a Karate Coach with the Australian Sports Commission.
Sensei Wally Dankiw (Nidan) is our Dojo's most experienced Senior Assistant Instructor. Sempai Hideo Sasaki (Yondan), Sempai Rosie Cranney (Nidan), Sempai Katherine Mountstephen (Nidan), and Sempai Alfred Le (Nidan) are also Assistant Instructors.
